AWB Progression A

Product Info

Pickup features: Passive humbucker
Impedence or other specs: Alnico V magnet - 12k - four wires
Price Paid: GBP 60
Purchased from: Kent Armstrong Rewinds (UK) - http://pickuprepairs.com/

Instrument

Model of guitar or bass: Patrick Eggle Berlin Plus
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Dimarzio PAF Pro
Other pickups on guitar: AWB Racer
Artists using this pickup: Who knows
You musical style(s): Pop, Blues, Rock - nothing particularly heavy
Reason for pickup change: I bought the guitar second hand and the amplified sound got nowhere near the sweet chiming sound of the acoustic instrument - something had to change.

Sound

Perceived output level: Hot enough to provide a bit of breakup on my Velocette 10 (which has no preamp gain). A good deal hotter than the stock bridge pickup on my Les Paul DC.
Tone: Biting, crisp treble. Nothing shrill just bags of attack and presence. I guess that's what you'd expect from a 12k coil.
Sonic evaluation: The Eggle Berlin will be unknown to many so I'll give you a flavour: It's a set mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard. The mahogany body has a fairly thick maple cap. The instrument is quite bright acoustically. I tested it through my Velocette 10 (15W Class A). I liked this pickup from the moment I first started to play with it. Play it clean and it's good - just a trace of preamp breakup that can be cleaned up by backing off the volume on the guitar. Increase the gain (using a pedal) and you get a big crisp cruchy sound great for rhythm and lead playing alike. Add heavy compression and the thing wails. Very versatile. The coil-tap sound (I use the coil away from the bridge) is good and useful too - it's a hot enough pickup to get reasonable output from a single coil.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I wouldn't want to put it in the neck position - I think that would be metal-head territory (although I didn't try it). For Blues and Rock it's a winner in the bridge.

Overall Rating

Comments: I've been playing 30 years on and off (mostly off).I don't have a lot of gear I try to keep things simple. My point of comparison for my tests was my Les Paul Double Cutaway which is a mellower, richer sounding guitar with much more genteel pups. I wanted the Berlin to be capable of a more aggressive sound and it is. Right now I love it completely.

I bought the pickups because Andy at Kent Armstrong Rewinds gave me the best service and a good deal. I got to try out the pickps and got the sound I wanted before I had to pay a penny. I got a good deal for buying two pickups from him. He answered all my stupid questions really quickly (by email). Thanks Andy!

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this pickup a: 10 Fantastic value

Product Info

Pickup features: Humbucker
Impedence or other specs:
Price Paid: Pounds Sterling 65.00
Purchased from: Kent Armstrong Rewinds (UK)

Instrument

Model of guitar or bass: Eggle Berlin, Les Paul Standard, Gib 335 and Pacifica
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Dimarzio Evolution & Gib 57 Plus
Other pickups on guitar: Stock
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): R&B, Jazz, rock
Reason for pickup change: I needed an urgent equivalent to Dimarzio Evolution which was unavailable at the time for a recording session. I had just met ANDY BLAKE (now heading Kent Armstrong Rewinds UK since Kent returned to the States)and challenged him to wind me something great... he did..... IT'S GREAT!

Sound

Perceived output level: Output average of a Custom Custom & Evolution (medium hot, not for thrash metal!)
Tone: Very Very balanced dirty growl or that lovely pure 3-D "velvet blanket of treble" sound when you draw back on the upstroke. Fantastically smooth sustain and quiet too! REALLY ANALOGUE & NATURAL
Sonic evaluation: Les Paul, Eggle Berlin, Gib 335, Yam Pacifica, Own Custom Built with Crate Vintage Classic 30 (AC30 ish!)all Tube or Fender 15w Practice amp!

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Mostly Crunchy rhythm or SRV style (wot..... humbucker??!) Not really suitable for neck, seems to compliment an equal quality neck p/up rather than replace one.

Overall Rating

Comments: I've been playing for 18 years and a pro reparer & maker for 12. I love the fact that I,ve fitted this pickup to guitars owned by muso's 18 to 60 years of age and playing heavy rock to jazz and they all loved it!! It's THE perfect all rounder and Andy will wind a variation of the original if asked to. Now when I want THAT sound I start with one of these and rarely have to ask Andy to modify one, what more can say? Best upgrade for Gibson '57 plus (my previous favorite) or stock Ibanez RG750 Dimarzios etc.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this pickup a: 10 Fantastic value
