Csound

Csound is a very powerful and flexible program that allows you to design your own instruments for playback of music. It provides you with plenty of tools to implement various synthesis techniques.

Csound can work with MIDI, reading events from a MIDI file, or take data directly from MIDI keyboard (if your computer is fast enough), as well as its own score files (which can be created from MIDI files too). The output can be written as various types of sound files, or sent directly to an audio out on fast machines.

To get started, you may want to get the file examples.zip from ftp.maths.bath.ac.uk - it has the files for the tutorials and many, many other examples that show what you can do with Csound. Here are some sources for more information and the binaries:

Computer Music Journal

The Computer Music Journal Archives are accessible via the web. You can find abstracts and editor's notes for several volumes of the CMJ, a few articles, source code, subscription and submission information, as well as a few more links.

Music Research Digest

The Music Research DIgest is a mailing list concerning computers and their applications to music representation systems, information retrieval systems for musical scores, music printing, music analysis, musicology and ethnomusicology and tertiary music education. It does NOT cover MIDI or electronic music. You can access the Music Research Digest Archive - read the index for more info on the list.
