Digidesign Releases Free Version of Pro ToolsSeptember 26, 1997 -- Pro Tools PowerMixTM version 3.3 will be provided free on CD-ROM, providing fully functioning Pro Tools software to customers worldwide at absolutely no charge. Initially, it will be bundled with the Avid MCXpress. Digidesign will follow-up with a procedure to download the software from their web site later this Fall. By early 1998, the CD-ROM will become available through a number of promotions, including trade shows, product demonstrations and Digidesign user events. The 'Pro Tools Free' CD-ROM features Pro Tools PowerMix, software that runs on a Power Macintosh without the need for additional hardware. Using the analog inputs and outputs of the Macintosh, PowerMix provides two simultaneous record tracks and up to 16 tracks of playback, 64 virtual tracks and 2 bands of digital EQ per track. All of Pro Tools' acclaimed editing features are available. Fully compatible with the Digidesign product line, Pro Tools Free allows customers to graduate to hardware-based Pro Tools systems as more sophisticated features become desirable.
