Genelec Introduces 1034B Tri-Amplified Active Control Room Monitor

September 26, 1998 -- Genelec, Inc., U.S. distributor of Genelec Active Monitoring Systems, is introducing their new 1034B Active Monitoring System: a new three-way system designed for large control rooms in the studio, post-production, broadcast, TV and CD mastering markets. The announcement was made by Will Eggleston, Genelec, Inc. Marketing Director.

The new 1034B was designed to be used either free-standing or flush mounted in the control room wall. Featuring two 12" low-frequency drivers, a 5" mid, and a 1" high-frequency tweeter assembly, the Genelec 1034B System can produce peak sound pressure levels in excess of 125 dB SPL @ 1 meter with unparalleled sonic accuracy.

The 1034B features bass, mid-range and treble controls to allow the system to be specifically tailored for the acoustic conditions of different control rooms. The 1034B incorporates Genelec's proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide Technology(TM) (DCW), which provides an extremely stable and precise soundstage throughout the listening area. This improved directivity control results in more direct (and less reflected) sound reaching the listeners, which produces a more realistic and stable image. The system can be used in both vertical and horizontal orientations by simply rotating the DCW unit. In addition, like all Genelec Active Monitoring Systems, the1034B features an electronic protection circuitry that protects the drivers from overload and distortion in extreme monitoring situations.

The Genelec 1034B is a completely self-powered system with internal crossover, room response equalizers and tri-amplifier assemblies. The bass, midrange and treble amplifiers each produce 2 X 400W, 350W and 120W of short term power respectively with very low harmonic and inter-modulation distortion.

The 1034B has two 12" low-frequency drivers in a vented configuration for maximum bass reproduction with a frequency response extending down to 28 HZ with the -3dB point at 32 Hz. The 5" mid-range speaker is a proprietary design and the high frequency driver is a 1" metal dome tweeter assembly.

Genelec's proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide Technology (DCW) is a means of greatly improving the performance of a direct radiating multiway loudspeaker under normal listening conditions. The basic idea is to match the different drive units precisely, both in terms of frequency response and directivity. This results in smoother frequency response both on and off axis. Also, due to improved directivity control, especially in the mid-range frequencies, more direct sound and less reflected sound is received at the listening position. This give more accurate stereo imaging and makes the system less sensitive to differing control room acoustics than any conventional direct radiator design. Genelec's DCW Technology improves drive units sensitivity by +2dB to +6dB thus increasing the system maximum SPL.

The active crossover network consists of three parallel band pass filters with crossover frequencies at 420 Hz and 3.2 kHz and a common balanced input stage. In order to obtain uniform frequency balance in different acoustic conditions, Genelec has included special calibrated controls in the crossover. The Bass, Mid-range and Treble level controls operate in 1 dB steps. Additionally, low frequency Tilt and Roll-off controls allow for more refined low frequency room response. A high-pass filter is included in the low-frequency channel to protect the woofer from subsonic signals. Variable input sensitivity allows for accurate level matching to the control room console.

The 1034B speaker cabinet is constructed of veneered MDF and is internally braced to eliminate structural resonances. The cabinet measures (horizontal mounting) 27-5/16" high x 35" wide x 15" deep (160 cubic liters), and weighs 161 lbs.
