Steinberg Announces Quadra Fuzz Multiband Distortion PlugIn

September 26, 1998 -- Steinberg, the market leader of music sofware on both Macintosh and Windows platforms today announced the Quadra Fuzz, a multiband distortion PlugIn based on a project by Craig Anderton and developed by Spectral Design for VST (MAC or Windows), Wavelab (Windows) or Direct-X (Windows) compatible host software.

Quadra Fuzz divides the signal into four independent frequency bands. These frequency bands can be independently distorted. This completely new approach makes a very subtle use of distortion possible. For example, a little distortion to the high frequencies results in an exciter-like effect (not quite - even better) which brings the signal up front in the mix. A little distortion on some bass frequencies doesn't spoil the signal but add harmonics to the bass. This results in amazing punch and warmth. Of course Quadra Fuzz works as a very sophisticated distortion unit in its classical role - just with more flexibility and control.QuadraFuzz is based on a hardware device built by Craig Anderton several years ago, which exactly did what Quadra Fuzz is doing right now. Spectral Design took Craig's device and built a perfect digital representation of the hardware box as a PlugIn.

Craig Anderton comments, "A couple years ago, I made an offhand comment about the coolness of multi-band distortion while gabbing with some folks from Steinberg. They were curious, so I sent them a hardware Quadrafuzz. A couple guitar players at Spectral Design got a hold of it, understood the concept instantly, and asked about doing a plug-in based on the design. Of course I said yes, but I was skeptical they could replicate the sound. Well, they've done an outstanding job of not just nailing the analog sound in software, but making it possible to create sounds that weren't available in the original hardware model. I'm having a blast with it, especially on drums."
