Tech 21
Tech 21, the company that brought us the Sans Amp, constantly comes up with products that offer lots of flexibility and control but are an absolute breeze to use. The latest addition to their innovative catalog is the Trademark 10. Weighing in at 14 pounds, the Trademark 10 is 10 watts (duh), with a single eight-inch speaker. Though similar to its predecessor, the Trademark 60, it is smaller yet it features a unique system of controls that make it a snap to locate your favorite sounds. In addition to the usual Low, Medium, High, Reverb, and Level knobs, the Trademark 10 includes a Character section, which features a knob to control overdrive, plus a trio of three-way selector switches, labeled Amp, Mod, and Speaker. Amp selects Fender, Marshall, and Boogie-type sounds. Mod selects clean, high-gain, and extra-high-gain settings. Speaker selects Flat (self-explanatory), U.K. (presumably a 4x12 closed back), and U.S. (probably a 2x12 open back).
Since the tone knobs don't really do a whole lot (probably on purpose), it's really difficult to screw up your tone. Instead, the Trademark 10 is just plug-in-and-play. And it sounds and plays nicely. The amp is reportedly designed for recording and practice. I'd imagine that it could cut a club gig if you turned it up all the way and used your guitar's volume knob to control the distortion level. Otherwise, you might want the P.A. person to take a direct feed off the XLR recording output and use the Trademark 10 as your stage monitor. Best of all, the sale price will probably edge just a tad above $300 in the U.S., based on an estimate by the company's Europe product rep. If this price is right, it's not much more expensive than the Sans Amp Classic - which would make it a real bargain. www.tech21nyc.com, 212-315-1116 |
