Shure

Tired of crappy monitor mixes? The Shure microphone company has a solution.

The PSM 400 personal monitor system offers in-ear monitors that are fed either by wireless or hard-wired transmitters. An internal limiter prevents hearing damage caused by feedback - although it's unlikely the limiter would ever be needed, since floor monitors are a primary cause of feedback.

The wireless system can accommodate an infinite number of receivers because the transmitter broadcasts the signal. The hardwired version, however, comes at a lower cost.

Officials at Shure insisted that the optional P4M personal monitor is key because it intercepts the microphone signals before they leave the stage. This allows you to use the P4M to control your own in-ear monitor mix. "You get the signal first," product specialist Scott Sullivan said. "No longer are you begging [the sound guy] for monitors."

All this doesn't come cheap. It costs 2,125 DM (approx. $1,012 USD) for a single transmitter and receiver, or 825 DM (approx. $393) for the same setup in hardwired form. Extra receivers are, of course, extra, and the P4M mixer will cost an additional 925 DM (approx. $440). Even so, if you're putting in a lot of time onstage, this system can save your ears, improve your house sound, and spare you the hassle of lugging monitor wedges to every gig.
