Their pickup pattern is perpendicular to the direction of the microphone axis (side-addressed). The model number and pickup pattern symbol mark the front of the mic. The condenser capsule exhibits a smooth frequency response with a slight presence boost in the 7 to 11kHz range. The polar response exhibits a high degree of rejection for sounds that impinge from the rear (cardioid) or sides (super-cardioid) of the mic. The microphone capsule and electronics are suspended elastically inside the metal housing in order to reduce the sensitivity to mechanical impact and structure-born noise. To further attenuate noise in extreme situations, the microphone stand holder can be replaced by an elastic suspension. Both the M 930 and M 940 connect to the microphone cable with a standard three-pin XLR plug. Power must be provided by an external 48-volt phantom supply according to DIN 45596 and IEC 266-15. The pressure gradient transducer of the M 990 uses a large-diameter gold sputtered plastic membrane. Its vacuum tube preamplifier uses a pentode tube working as a triode. The mic’s N 920.1 power supply is AC mains-powered and switchable between primary voltage of 115 or 230 volts at 50 or 60Hz. When used with cables longer than 50 meters, the heater voltage should be set internally to 5.8 volts.
