Steinberg introduced its Cubase VST Series for Windows and Mac OS at the Messe. Cubase VST 5.0 offers a digital recording engine with scalable recording modes, with a resolution as high as 32-bit floating point and 128 channels of audio in the top of the line Cubase VST/32 version.

The new flagship of the Cubase VST 5 series, Cubase VST/32, offers 96kHz recording and Apogee UV 22 processing. The program's mixing desk offers up to 128 channels of digital audio, eight FX sends, four channel inserts, and four master inserts. The handling of FX and plug-ins has been completely redesigned. The new FX rack hosts new control elements, and the new channel EQs can now be edited graphically.

Thanks to the TrueTape Mode, each track of Cubase VST/32 lets you add tape compression on demand. And for high definition MIDI timing, Steinberg offers LTB (linear time base technology) in conjunction with the new Midex8 USB MIDI interface, which achieves accuracy down to 300 microseconds.

Cubase VST 5 comes with a range of effects processors. The new CubaseVerb will give you breathy vocals and cavernous snare drums. As for VST Instruments, Cubase VST 5 comes with a virtual sound module packed with more than 70 MB of sounds.

The handling of musical events has been enhanced through object-orientated programming. Single notes, phrases, parts, groups of parts, or entire data ranges can be selected, moved, or copied to any destination in the program or to the desktop. In version 5, every user now can have his or her own set of working setups.

Other improvements offered in VST 5 include the Folder Track functionality, which allows users to "fold away" any number of MIDI or audio tracks to streamline the display; a MIDI Track Mixer with VST-style control over any connected MIDI gear; a system resolution going up to 15360 ppq, along with real-time Groove Control for MIDI groove shaping; more than 300 new scoring functions; Marker Tracks for easy navigation through the arrangement; a new toolbox with a number of new visual tools for real-time editing of parts and phrases; a scalable transport bar; individually scaleable tracks; real-time MIDI modifiers per part; new Instrument and Patch handling; and support for hardware control surfaces.

The Cubase VST 5 Series will be available in June. Prices are $399 for VST 5, $549 for VST Score 5, and $799 for VST/32 5. Updates from any previous version of Cubase are $129.
