The manufacturer that gave us T-Racks and GrooveMaker showed SampleTank at the Messe. This software sound module combines a sampler/synth engine with multisampled sounds in a VST instrument. The software equivalent of a sample-playback-based sound module, SampleTank gives the user limited access to sound parameters (only four "quick edit" parameters per patch) but loads quickly and allows users to load a 32-MB bank into 16Mb through a real-time compression algorithm that doubles RAM space. An Akai library conversion utility will be bundled with the program.

SampleTank is designed for fast access to sounds, through both the 16 category buttons to the right of the display (piano, organ, guitar, etc.) and the built-in search command, which will retrieve any sound stored on your hard disk or CD-ROM drive.

The instrument is capable of up to 128-voice polyphony. It also offers four effects generators, with 15 different algorithms, and a choice of four stereo outputs, which can be configured as eight mono outs.

IK Multimedia expects to ship SampleTank in June 2000. Tentative suggested retail is $299 when bundled with a 128-MB sound library, or $499 with a 500-MB sound library.
