Yamaha
The only spanking new sampler making an appearance at the Messe was aimed at the budget / beginners / dance / DJ market. The Yamaha SU200 is a scaled-down version of the SU700 sampling workstation that was introduced at Winter NAMM 1999. The SU200 is a compact tabletop unit that offers 21 seconds of stereo 44.1kHz sampling time, or up to 333 seconds of mono 5.5kHz sampling time. Up to 24 samples can be stored in three banks of eight samples. You can then create tracks by looping samples and treating them with the six onboard effects. Some exciting effects such as Loop Remix, which essentially alters the rhythm of your samples, and Slice, which adds rhythmic gating to your samples, accompany standards such as delay and resonant filter. The SU200 will also sync all the samples to your desired tempo or to MIDI clock (via its one MIDI in) without changing the original pitch. The resampling function is a crucial memory-saving feature, as it allows you to combine more than one sample to one pad, or to resample sounds while effecting them or "scratching" them with the ribbon controller. Other mentionables include a tap tempo button, mic input, bundled sample CD, backlit LCD display, WAV file compatibility, backup via SmartMedia card, and battery power for true portability. All in all, it's a tidy little package scheduled to ship in June for around $450. www.yamaha.com, 714-522-9011 |
