Audio-Technica Introduces AT4060 Tube Microphone

In the tradition of Audio-Technica's legendary 40 Series microphones, the AT4060 Cardioid Vacuum Tube Capacitor Microphone provides warm, natural sound, uncompromised dynamic range and extremely high SPL capability.

July 10, 1998 -- Leading microphone manufacturer Audio-Technica U.S., Inc., announces the introduction of the AT4060 cardioid vacuum tube capacitor microphone. Designed for use in the most demanding applications, the new AT4060 is a direct result of a collaboration between the Audio-Technica engineering staff and prominent recording studio engineers and producers who performed year-long field evaluations.

The AT4060 features a cardioid polar pattern and utilizes dual-aged, large-diaphragm elements for an extended flat frequency response (20-20,000 Hz). The 2-micron-thick vapor-deposited gold diaphragm provides accurate reproduction of even the most subtle sounds, especially high-frequency signals not easily reproduced by conventional large-diaphragm condenser transducers. In addition, for a warm, natural quality, the large diaphragm design provides remarkable low frequency performance. A specially-tuned element improves dynamic range and the ability to handle high SPL's (up to 149 dB, 1 kHz at 0.5% T.H.D.) without sacrificing high-frequency performance.

At the heart of the AT4060 is a uniquely-configured circuit which enhances tube performance. Each 6922 tube is hand-selected by Audio-Technica engineers and is then individually aged and tested to ensure the microphone maintains optimum performance characteristics.

The AT4060 features floating-construction elements to achieve peak performance and isolation from noise and vibration. In addition, a heavy-duty Audio-Technica AT8447 shock mount is included to provide mechanical isolation and secure mounting.

The AT4060 operates in conjunction with the AT8560 power supply, which is included. The 1U 1/2 rack power supply has a power switch with LED on the front panel, while the rear panel has a low-impedance output (3-pin XLRM-type connector) and a ground-lift switch. Mains voltage (120V or 230V AC) is selectable via a switch which is also located on the rear of the unit. The AT4060 microphone is finished in matte black and weighs 22.6 oz. (640 grams).

Leading artists and engineers participated in the year-long field evaluations of the AT4060, using it on selected tracks for albums which have now gone platinum, including:

Celine Dion, Let's Talk About Love, David Foster, producer, Humberto Gatica, engineer/producer; George Strait, Carrying Your Love With Me, Tony Brown/George Strait, producers, Chuck Ainlay/Steve Marcantonio, engineers; Deana Carter, Did I Shave My Legs For This?, Chris Farren, producer, Steve Marcantonio, engineer; John Michael Montgomery, What I Do The Best, Csaba Petocz, producer/engineer, Joe Chiccarelli, engineer.

The AT4060 cardioid vacuum tube capacitor microphone is available July 15, 1998 and has a suggested retail price of $1695.00.
