Korg N1R AI2 Synthesis Module

Over 1700 sounds in a single-rack space module

July 10, 1998 -- Korg USA announces the introduction of the Korg N1R Synthesis Module, a 1U rack version of the popular N1 Music Synthesizer. Like the N1, the Korg N1R module offers a massive range of sounds, including GM, GS and XG soundmap support, with a high degree of parameter control and a simple, but highly effective user interface.

The Korg N1R utilizes Korg's sophisticated AI2 Synthesis System voicing technology, including 563 multisamples and 304 drum samples stored in 18 Mbytes of PCM ROM, many drawn from the incredibly successful M1, 01/W, Trinity and SGproX Korg keyboards. Numerous sampled pianos, from concert grands to classic electric, join with enhanced kick and snare samples (enough to create up to 39 complete drum kits), as well as strings, synths, sound effects to provide a total of 1,671 separate and distinct sounds and sound effects. In addition to 800 great Korg-voiced Programs and Combinations, the N1R also fully supports the General MIDI standard, and is the only module to offer both GS and XG soundmaps for the highest degree of compatibility with computer music formats of any product in its class.

The N1R also features the same powerful Performance Mode as the N1 keyboard, allowing for layers (two sounds simultaneously) and splits (different sounds in the upper and lower registers). An additional fourteen parts are available in this mode for full 16-part multi-timbral sequencing applications. Using the dedicated PCI/F computer port, the N1R offers an astounding 32-part multi-timbrality for extended orchestrations. Enhancing this functionality, the N1R allows either Programs or Combinations to be used on a single Part - a long-requested feature for Korg instruments.

The Korg N1R is full-featured in terms of functionality - with two completely independent digital stereo multi-effect units with forty-eight types of effects including a unique resonance filter, chorus, delay and rotary speaker. Its front panel provides dedicated buttons for Split, Layer and Portamento, with four knobs for easy control of VDFA Attack/Release Times, VDF Cutoff, and Effect Dynamic Modulation for intuitive, real-time control of basic aspects of the sound. In addition to these four parameters, four other assignable parameters can be freely selected for assignment to these knobs. An onboard arpeggiator (the first in its class for rack-mounted modules) with 20 types of preset patterns with numerous editable parameters can be synchronized with an external sequencer. All these settings can be stored to an internal memory as one of 32 "Performances," letting users recall and play custom sound combinations instantly.

The status of all of the Korg N1R's functions are easily accessible via a large, highly-visible 144 x 40 pixel full-graphic backlit LCD display, which can be switched from amber to green for accurate mode settings and exceptionally easy sound editing, even under performance conditions. Plus, in the Performance mode, sixteen types of icons provide instant visual confirmation of the function of the N1R's controller knobs.

The new Korg N1R Synthesis Module will be available in August and carries a suggested list price of $850.
