The 2000 Golden Axe Awards

Bass Unlimited - Honorable Mentions

<- Back to Introduction | To #10 thru #6

Now, the Honorable Mentions, listed in no particular order:

Brubaker Guitars

This is a well executed, nicely carved bass from Brubaker. This model, a Lexa Series 5-string, has a deep set bolt-on neck. If you look at the back of the instrument you will see how far down into the body the second set of bolts are. This makes it sort of a cross between a bolt-on and a neck through.

The front carving is unique and stylish. The color was a lovely dark burgundy. The back is swamp ash with a quilted maple top, a one-piece hard maple neck, and a cocobolo wood fingerboard. The pickups are Basslines and the hardware is Hipshot.

Nice work from a small manufacturer. This is one of those basses that just feels right. The list price is $3,390 U.S. To reach Brubaker, click on www.brubakerguitars.com.

Spector Basses

Stuart Spector and the NS5XL
(Click for a close-up of the body)

My first encounter with a Spector bass was at Motor City Guitar, a high-end gear store near my home. It was very much like this one except it didn't have the nice fret inlays. I played it for an hour. I couldn't put it down. It was all I could do to stop myself from going into credit card shock and just walking out of the store with it.

Stuart Spector is one of the master class instrument designers of the world. This charming gentleman just goes about designing these great bases. Beautiful, form fitting, nice playing, super basses. This model, the NS5XL, is the top-of-the-line Spector with a list price of $4,500.

Made of solid quilted maple, it has a totally carved body (front and back), neck-through design, abalone inlays, and EMG pickups. Stuart also placed an instrument in the Bass-Best Values division. If you have never tried a Spector, try one real soon. You'll like it.

The Spector web site is located at www.spectorbass.com.

Roscoe Guitars

Check out the wood on this Roscoe. Ooooo baby, I'm in love. Roscoe says that this is exhibition grade quilted maple (no kidding) with a Spanish cedar body and a birdseye maple fingerboard.

This model, the LG-3005, was in a beautiful blue skin and had Bartolini pickups for a price tag of $3,400. This instrument feels right the second you pick it up, until the moment when you don't really want to put it down.

If you have never heard of Roscoe, don't feel bad. I never heard of them either, but I'll never forget them now. I could have hung around the Roscoe booth and played this baby all day.
