The 2000 Golden Axe Awards
Guitar Unlimited - Acoustic (#5 thru #1)<- Back to Introduction | To Electrics #10 thru #6
Acoustic #5: Maton
This beautiful guitar comes from Maton. It is made of blackwood and has abalone inlays. A stunning instrument with a unique sound texture. The wood is beautiful, the craftsmanship is excellent, and the inlays are crisp and classic. I enjoyed playing this instrument. The company did not supply us with the price of this custom piece. If you would like to contact Maton their email is info@hhmusic.com.au or check out there web site at www.maton.com.au. Acoustic #4: RainSong
RainSong entered their all graphite acoustic guitar. When I say all graphite, I mean it. The body, neck, bridge, and everything is graphite. You may think that the lack of wood would destroy the tone. Well, Im here to tell you that I played it and it sounds quite nice. It plays well, has a crisp unique sound, is very responsive and loud. I loved the way its black/gray graphite body shimmers in the light. It has a look like no other acoustic guitar Ive ever seen. This guitar is not just for special situations (you know, the guitar you only use one song a set for that SPECIAL sound). The RainSong could be your only or main instrument without any problem at all. The fretboard is inlayed in abalone and it uses Fishman Blender electronics. The list price of this instrument is $2,245 U.S. It seems well worth the money. To learn more about RainSong, visit their web site at www.rainsong.com.
Acoustic #3: BreedloveThis one made us stop in our tracks. What a great instrument! For those of you who are familiar with Breedlove already, I neednt tell you how great they sound. For those of you who have never tried a Breedlove, you should. They are great instruments and this one not only was a great playing instrument, just look at it. The top is made of redwood with walnut back and sides, blood wood bindings, and an ebony bridge and fingerboard. The dragon on the fingerboard wraps around on the neck and is carved from the wood of the neck itself. A stunning example of excellent quality in an acoustic. Well done. The list price of this beauty is $7,954 US. To contact Breedlove email pnewport@breedloveguitars.com or click on in at www.breedloveguitars.com |

| Jean Larrivee and the OM-10KK (Click for a close-up of the guitar) |
Thank you for riding guitar bus tours. We have now entered inlay city. If you look out the bus to your left, you will see the Larrivee OM-10KK guitar.
Wow!!! If anyone writes me and says this guitar was only picked because of the inlay, Ill have to shoot them. Larrivees are some of the nicest acoustic guitars made today. This guitar has to be the nicest Larrivee I have ever seen. The instruments body is completely made of reserve grade koa wood and is inlayed with mother of pearl and abalone. Im not sure what else to say but, Wow again! Jean Larrivee is a great luthier, but he has really out done himself this time. The list price of this instrument is $7,949 US. Reach Larrivee at matthew@larrivee.com or www.larrivee.com. Nice job Jean.

Drum roll please. And the winner is: The Living Jewels guitar. Harmony Central is happy and very proud to present the first ever Acoustic Guitar Golden Axe title to Taylor Guitars. This instrument not only played like a top notch Taylor, but had the most interesting, unique, and well executed inlays we have seen on an acoustic. The gold fish inlay almost seem to be swimming across the sea blue body. Notice the fish inlay at the neck joint that crosses over perfectly on to the fret board. This type of work is very difficult to do.
This instrument was a show stopper in a booth full of show stoppers. Taylor had an incredible run at the Golden Axe Awards this year not only winning the Acoustic-Unlimited, but also placing in two other divisions. Only Warrior did better as a company. Taylor also took 10th place in last years unlimited guitar division. Great job Bob and congratulations. You can visit Taylor at www.taylorguitars.com.
Now for the electric/jazz (semi hollow) body guitars.
