The Winter NAMM 2000 Oddballs
From Jackson come the ships used during the special effects battle sequence at the end of Star Trek episode 127. OK . . . not really . . . but they look like space ships dont they? These two guitars are actually high end (and expensive) instruments from Jacksons collector series. I thought these were way cool. Contact Jackson at www.jacksonguitars.com.
Also from Jackson, check out the graphic on this monster. When I say monster, I mean it literally.
Now, onto one of my personal favorites from Schecter. I love the Schecter booth at the NAMM show. Its like Oddball heaven. One unusual guitar after another. This is not to say that Schecter doesnt make some great, more normal looking, guitars. But, they certainly have some creative geniuses there to come up with all this cool stuff. Im not really sure what to call this guitar, so I settled on "Time Capsule". This guitar had a thick coating of resin on the top into which was embedding all kinds of stuff. Some of the stuff, like the dials and gages, actually worked. This is my personal favorite of all the Oddballs If you just have to have one of these beauties for yourself, check out the Schecter Web site at www.schecterguitars.com. Yes, that is the Prince . . . I mean Artist . . . I mean Artist formerly known as Prince . . . oh whatever! Yes thats one of his guitars. According to the representative at Schecter he actually played it for a while. And hey, thats strange enough right there.
We ran across this little devil from McSwain Guitars at the Anvil booth. I guess you could say this is another rock and roll monster. The guitar has Draculas head carved out of the body which is sticking up at least two inches off the surface of the body. As I understand it, Draculas head actually glows in the dark. Perfect for playing "Welcome to My Nightmare" by Alice Cooper. If youre wondering, the guitar is resting (so to speak) in a Coffin Case, a division of Anvil incorporated. What could be more appropriate than that.
Also from McSwain Guitars comes "Space", the final frontier. These are the voyages of the star ship Enterprise. Its five year mission . . . oh alright . . . so Ive watched one to many repeats of Star Trek. However, I think you could look at this guitar for five years and still keep seeing something different in it every time. A very unique carving to say the least. Check out McSwains web page at www.mcswainguitars.com. Well, there you have it. The Y2K OddBalls. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed bringing them to you. If you have an OddBall of your own, send me a picture Id love to see it. Until next time, Keep Jamming. Cliff Cliff Suttle (cliffnotes@harmony-central.com) has been studying music for over twenty years including studies at the University of Michigan. Fluent on keyboards, guitar, and bass, Cliff is currently playing in an all original rock band Middle Earth. Cliff's motto: Understand the theory and you can play anything. |
