E-mu Systems ADAT Sync Card for Darwin

January 18, 1996 -- E-mu Systems(R), Inc. today announced a new ADAT sync card option for the DARWIN digital audio disk recorder. The new option card will be demonstrated at the Winter Session of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show. The card can be easily installed into DARWINs units already in the field, or ordered as an option in a new machine. The ADAT sync card option allows for multiple DARWINs to be synced to each other or to any ADAT compatible devices, and provides all transport control, including arming of record tracks, punch in/out and locates, as well as time code and word clock. E-mu plans to ship the ADAT sync card in early spring of 1996.

"Creating an effective random access editor for the installed base of ADAT systems has been one of the primary goals for DARWIN since its initial conception." said Tom McLoughlin, president of E-mu Systems, "In our evaluation of the market, we felt that no other company had come up with the right combination of digital audio workstation features in a package that interfaced seamlessly with ADAT systems, and functioned in a manner familiar to ADAT users. With the addition of the ADAT sync card, DARWIN becomes that system and we expect great things from it."

By adding a DARWIN to an existing ADAT/BRC system, a DARWIN with the ADAT optional sync card installed would appear to be another ADAT to the BRC. In addition to expanding the number of tracks in the system, DARWIN adds non-destructive random access editing. If the optional ADAT digital I/O is used, tracks can be transferred between ADATs and DARWIN for editing, all controlled by a BRC and all in the digital domain.

Another application would be to sync multiple DARWINs together, permitting them to be controlled by a wide variety of sources. Remote controls like the Alesis BRC and JL Cooper Cue Point could be used for a multi-track music studio. Many computer based sequencers on the market that support MIDI Machine Control could also control multiple DARWINs.

By supporting the existing ADAT sync standard, DARWIN may also be used with a variety of other products. Users who wish to sync Darwin to Sony 9-pin protocol can connect DARWIN's ADAT sync to one of several synchronizers on the market that support the Sony 9-pin protocol.
