Digideign LoFi/SciFi TDM Plug-ins

January 16, 1997 -- Digidesign today announced the addition of a new TDM Plug-In package, the LoFi/SciFi Family, to the ever-growing list of sound manipulation options available within the Pro Tools TDM environment. The LoFi/SciFi Family is a bundle of three TDM Plug-lns providing "down-processing" and analog synthesizer effects designed to address the needs of musical genres such as rap, hip hop, industrial music, and others, in which this unique sound is an inherent part of their popularity. The LoFi/SciFi Family of TDM Plug-lns allows these "retro" effects to be available within the Pro Tools environment, eliminating the need to locate often discontinued and increasingly expensive older outboard processors.

Instead of offering pristine audio quality, LoFi intentionally degrades audio quality in a creative way through a number of available processes such as bit rate reduction and distortion. Prior to the availability of this type of TDM Plug-ln, creators of contemporary musical forms, such as dance and rap music, and sound designers would be required to re-sample audio files through a lower bitrate sampler or re-process the file through a modular analog synth.

The SciFi TDM Plug-In provides unique effects through the use of ring modulation, frequency modulation and variable frequency resonators. SciFi enables Pro Tools users to emulate the popular analog synthesizer type of effects as a sound design tool.

RectiFi generates harmonics or subharmonics through waveform rectification. A built-in Low Pass Filter can be used to smooth out the resulting harmonically rich waveform.

The LoFi/SciFi Family of Plug-lns combine the "worst" of the past with the best of present digital audio tools at an affordable price. The LoFi/SciFi TDM Plug-lns will be available in Q2, 1997 at a retail price of $395* through authorized Digidesign dealers.
(* - Pricing is in US dollars. International pricing may be slightly higher.)
