Akai Ships DPS12 Digital Personal Studio

January 29, 1998 -- Akai Professional unveiled its DPS12 12-Track Digital Personal Studio at AES in New York, and has now started delivery in time for the 1998 Winter NAMM Show.

The Akai DPS12 is a powerful, yet portable 12-track random-access digital recorder capable of recording to convenient removable Jaz cartridges or SCSI hard disks. Six balanced analog inputs utilize reference-grade mic preamps, ensuring an extremely low noise floor and generous headroom in the critical mic-to-ADC path. Using the analog inputs combined with the S/PDIF optical I/O, the DPS12 can record a maximum of 8 tracks simultaneously, with 12 tracks on playback. The 12 tracks utilize no compression and offer full random-access edit capability with no generational loss.

The DPS12 features a 20-channel digital mixer with programmable EQ. Twelve assignable faders and pan pots, combined with the virtual mixer display, allow real time mix control of all 12 tracks and 8 inputs simultaneously.

The DPS12 simplifies control with its bright, intuitive graphic display utilizing a menu-driven interface with custom windows for all major operations. Each major operations window is activated by dedicated keys on the front panel, while assignable function keys under the display allow access to most operating parameters within one or two key strokes.

The DPS12 Studio models include the all-new EB2M stereo multi-effects processor, including a wide range of user-programmable effects like reverb, chorus, flange, compressor/ limiter, a rotary speaker emulator, and custom 3-band parametric equalization.

At a suggested retail price of $1,499, the 12-track DPS12 offers an unprecedented dollar-per-track value.
