Cakewalk Announces Metro 4.0 for Mac

Metro 4.0 Delivers Digital Audio, Real-Time Audio Effects, and Plug-In Support

January 29, 1998 -- Cakewalk has announced Metro 4, the first music software for the Macintosh to deliver integrated MIDI and digital audio, real-time audio effects, and support for third-party plug-ins for less than $200 (U.S.).

Metro 4 offers users the power and flexibility of non-linear digital audio recording for a fraction of the cost of a tape-based multi-track system. It is a full-featured music and sound authoring tool for the Macintosh that supports up to 64 simultaneous tracks of audio during playback. It includes real-time audio effects processing for reverb, flange, chorus, parametric EQ, and delay; and supports Adobe Premiere and other third-party audio plug-ins.

"For the first time, high-end music and sound creation tools are available to Mac users at an affordable price," said Greg Hendershott, chairman and chief technology officer, Cakewalk. "Metro 4 sets a new standard in price-performance for integrated digital audio and MIDI software," added Hendershott.

New in Metro 4

  • Integrated MIDI and digital audio recording/editing, enabling users to record and play back up to 64 tracks of audio without the need for additional audio hardware.

  • Includes real-time audio processing effects for reverb, flange, chorus, parametric EQ, and delay. Apply audio effects fast with pre-programmed and custom effects presets.

  • Pitch shifting; create instant harmonies or fix off-pitch audio tracks (retain the unique qualities of a vocal track with the format-preserving option).

  • Support for Adobe Premiere and VST-compatible plug-ins, enabling users to add processing power easily and affordably.

  • Variable sampling rates; record and edit audio at the resolution needed with variable sampling rates of up to 48 kHz.

  • Perform "post production" on any QuickTime movie. Extract and edit audio from QuickTime movies, and create new soundtracks.

  • Synchronization of audio and MIDI tracks to popular SMPTE/MTC formats, for creating soundtracks for film and video.

  • Text markers; quickly create film and video "hit point" lists by inserting text markers on the fly during playback.

Cakewalk Metro 4 has an estimated street price of $199 (U.S.) and will begin shipping March of 1998.
