Paul Reed Smith McCarty(R) Archtop/McCarty(R) Archtop II
January 29, 1998 -- "Joe Knaggs, our Private Stock luthier, came and said to me, 'Paul, I want to build an Archtop'. I knew it would take many months to prototype such an instrument, not to mention the investment in time and labor, but after a lot of discussion it was agreed. At that time I really had no idea what he had in mind. The instrument he produced was a beautiful violi carved instrument front and back, with no bracing and a sound post. We took it to a NAMM show as a Private Stock prototype. The tone of the instrument, its playability and peoples reaction was so outstanding we decided to put the instrument into production. The result of this design, the McCarty Archtop, is a full bodied acoustic guitar carved inside and out with a natural tone and volume unheard of in its compact size. We use CNC machinery to carve the tops, inside the tops, the backs and inside the backs. I have never seen the release of an instrument cause such excitement. This guitar crosses all musical boundaries." McCarty Archtop
