Akai DPS12 Version 2.0
January 28, 1999 -- Akai Musical Instrument Corporation introduced the latest feature enhancements to the DPS12 Digital Personal Studio at the January NAMM show in Los Angeles. The DPS12 is truly a complete digital studio, combining a powerful 12-track random-access digital disk recorder and digital mixer in one. The DPS12 eliminates the need for complex product interfacing, while keeping data in the digital domain. Recordings can be stored on optional removable Jaz cartridges or optional SCSI hard disks, allowing the flexibility of recording cuts of any length, limited only by the size of their storage medium. The Akai DPS12 offers an unprecedented dollar-per-track value at a suggested retail price of $1,499 without storage. Version 2.0 software adds the ability to create Audio CD disks using CD-R/CD-RW drives that support MMC (Multi Media Command ANSI X3) protocols in both x1 and x2 write modes. With the addition of a supported write drive, DPS12 users can now record, edit, add effects, mix their projects, and produce a finished CD in addition to the other storage options. A Timestretch function has been added, allowing the phase coherent processing of stereo samples. Incorporating technology similar to Akai's newest digital samplers, this function offers a choice of 54 algorithms, providing an extensive variety of options. MIDI System Exclusives have been implemented allowing external control of DPS12 functions such as Control Panel and Mixer Settings. The M.E.S.A. updates will also support the control of DPS12 functions using System Exclusive Commands. Other additions include increased reverb functions, adding new optimized algorithms and increasing the performance of the EB2M Multi-Effects Processor. Version 2.0 software also allows the backup of multiple projects onto a single disk and the option of backup or reload of a single project from a disk containing multiple projects. The DPS12 Version 2.0 Operating System Upgrade will be available for download beginning in January, 1999, free of charge on the Akai Web Site.
