January 28, 1999 -- HHB Communications debuts the Radius and Classic Series-which include no less than eight new dynamics processors, preamps and outboard EQs based around vacuum tube technology-at the NAMM Convention, held from January 28 to 31 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Booth W343.

For the home and project studio, the HHB Radius Series delivers the unique sonic signature normally only associated with high budget, big studio productions and includes the Radius 10 Tube Mic Pre Amp, Radius 20 Tube Parametric Equalizer, Radius 30 Tube Compressor, Radius 40 Tube Voice Processor and Radius 50 Tube Mic Pre Amp/Compressor. For precision control, flexibility and impeccable audio performance, the HHB Classic Series comprises the Classic 60 Tube Compressor, Classic 70 Tube Parametric Equalizer and Classic 80 Tube Mic Pre Amp.

As HHB Managing Director Ian Jones explains, the choice of tubes for the Classic and Radius processors was an entirely logical one. "At HHB, we believe in using the right tools for the job, and nothing matches the unique warmth and presence of the vacuum tube. Indeed, both the Radius and Classic designs incorporate solid state circuitry with its vastly superior gain performance and low noise where relevant, with the tubes applied in the areas where they can deliver their maximum sonic effect."

Central to the HHB design philosophy is the minimal use of transformers in the signal path. Advanced transistor circuitry ensures maximum power transfer between the valve stages, with none of the frequency response roll off, distortion and phase errors normally associated with the use of transformers.

Unlike other tube processors that use cheap power supplies, even the low cost Radius range uses heavy duty, fully stabilized PSUs to provide maximum gain and headroom, minimizing hum and noise. High HT voltages are used to supply the tubes (250V DC in the case of the Classics), with balanced DC heater supplies where necessary.

Another critical advantage comes from the choice of the tubes themselves, with HHB insisting upon military specification General Electric 12AX7 and Siemens EF86 pentode devices in the Classic Series.
