1. "Inside My Mind (Blue Skies)" from Vertigo (Jive/Electro)

Real
MP3 (480k)

The gorgeously lo-fi echo on the chorus vocal of "Inside My Mind (Blue Skies)" is achieved with a classic '70s Roland Space Echo tape delay. Because the unit relies on actual tapes -- which tend to run out at strategic moments -- and its instability often makes it hard to get the same effect twice, Tom and Andy sample the effect once they've got what they like and then drop the samples into their sequences.

2. "At The River" from Vertigo (Jive/Electro)

Real
MP3 (480k)

With a little bit of time-stretching, Groove Armada built their breakthrough 1999 UK Top 10 dance single -- the slo-mo ballad "At The River" -- around this charming melody made famous in the '50s by American songstress Patti Page.

3. "At The River" from Vertigo (Jive/Electro)

Real
MP3 (480k)

The low bit-rate sampled Northern brass sound off the original Patti Page record with a touch of JV1080 strings forms the nostalgic chord structure of "At The River," over which Andy Cato improvises his roughly recorded trombone line.

4. "I See You Baby" from Vertigo (Jive/Electro)

Real
MP3 (480k)

Familiar to many American listeners as the theme to a recent Toyota commercial, "I See You Baby" is built upon a funky rhythm loop constructed with Steinberg's ReCycle software. A Nord Lead with realtime filter sweeps generates the simple but catchy synth parts.
