1996 Breedlove--New Guinea Ebony ($1200 upcharge) with German Spruce top ($600 upcharge). Wide fingerboard for fingerstyle playing. Abalone rosette.

The guitar is now almost 8 years old and the sound is both absolutely beautiful and completely unique among guitars i have played (and I have owned and played several great guitars).
The bass is like a steinway piano's. The mids sing and the trebles depending on where they are played can sound very tinny or very warm and full.

Action, Fit, & Finish: 10
The best action on any guitar I have played. I use medium strings and can zip through jazz chirds as if they were extra lights. Becasue of the unique truss supprt sytem, the bridge and top are absolutely flat, guaranteeing low action all the way up the neck.
Some peopel think Taylors set the standard for great playability. But they Breedlove's have them beat by a mile because of their unique design. The intonation of the instrument, BTW is absolutley perfect on all frets and strings.

Reliability/Durability: N/A
Well it's not an Ovation or Guild so it is not the most bombproof guitar outthere, but neither is it overly fagile. It is though a beautifull crafted work of art and demands the same care you would extend to any prized possession.

Price Paid: US $6,000

'96 special order ebony back and sides, german spruce top. Flawless construction in every detail. A work of art. Use a Highlander IP=1 which I had installed after removing factory Fishman Matrix. Cs body style is a deep concert with a sharp exterme cutaway which gives great access but for some, not me, might not sit stabily on knee.

It is a finderstyle guitar and ius really the ulitimate for that. The basses are deep and resonant and the highs and mids very balanced.

Not overly loud but projects well. Sweetest, most complex tone I've found.

Action, Fit, & Finish: 10
Very low action. W/ special bridge support the neck is very straight and action low. I have a 1 13/16" nut which gives wider spacing for fingerstyle--special order--standeard is 1 3/4". The woods are amazing. The ebony cpomes from New Guinea and is identtical in sound to Brazilian Rosewood, but costs less. The purling is bloodwood--beautiful 25 yeard old European spruce top.

Reliability/Durability: 8
Reliabilty is perfect.
It is not an Ovation and so I treat it with care.
It is as durable as one would hope for this quality of workmanship.

Great. No problems, but have chatted with builder Steve Henderson.

Overall Rating: 10
Playing since mid=60's. This is the best guitar I've ever played (and it's mine!) Try a Breedlove. This one has lots of inlay and expensive woods, but even the standard mahogany, sitka spruce breedloves are great.
