July 1, 1996

Cakewalk Music Software is now shipping 5.0 versions of its entire Cakewalk product line. Included in this next generation of Cakewalk products are Cakewalk Pro Audio 5.0 ($399 MSRP) and Cakewalk Pro Audio 5.0 Deluxe ($479 MSRP), Cakewalk Professional(TM) 5.0 ($249 MSRP), Cakewalk Home Studio 5.0 ($129 MSRP), and Cakewalk Song Station 5.0 ($69 MSRP). Registered Cakewalk customers can upgrade to version 5.0 by contacting Cakewalk Music Software directly.

With the version 5.0 releases, Cakewalk Music Software brings integrated MIDI and digital audio recording to a wide range of PC users, from professional musicians to music enthusiasts. This integration of MIDI and digital audio allows users to incorporate vocals, guitars, horns, sound effects or any other audio inputs into their MIDI sequences.

Other new Cakewalk 5.0 features include Windows 95 & Windows 3.1 editions on one CD-ROM; flexible, intuitive Clip song structures; enhanced notation with guitar chord grids, dynamic markings, and enharmonic spellings; an expanded Instrument Definition library; and more.

New 5.0 Feature Highlights:

  • Dual Platform. The Cakewalk 5.0 line includes both Windows(TM) 3.1 and Windows 95(TM) versions on a single CD-ROM. Cakewalk Pro Audio, Cakewalk Professional, and Cakewalk Home Studio also include the Windows 3.1 version on 3.5" disks.

  • Windows 95-specific Features. Cakewalk now offers the widest range of fully compliant, 32-bit MIDI and digital audio software for Windows 95. The Windows 95 versions of Cakewalk support: long file names; tooltips; creation of Cakewalk files on the Windows 95 Desktop; an on-screen MIDI activity monitor; support for running multiple instances of Cakewalk simultaneously; dragging and dropping of Cakewalk files from the Windows 95 Explorer directly into Cakewalk; more.

  • Multi-Track Digital Audio. All Cakewalk 5.0 products now allow you to record multiple tracks of digital audio along with your MIDI tracks: record and edit unlimited tracks of CD-quality digital audio in Cakewalk Pro Audio; record four tracks in Cakewalk Professional and Cakewalk Home Studio; and two tracks in Cakewalk Song Station.

Audio features include VU meters; variable sampling rates from 11 kHz to 44.1 kHz; audio scrubbing; audio cut/copy/paste and drag/drop commands; split/combine audio clips; mix-down multiple tracks simultaneously; more. Cakewalk Pro Audio, Cakewalk Professional and Cakewalk Home Studio feature a ten band graphic EQ. Cakewalk Pro Audio features advanced audio editing: Groove Quantize audio-to-MIDI, MIDI-to audio, and audio-to-audio; extract audio timing; cross-fade with custom fade curves; remove silence; parametric EQ; more.

  • Audio and MIDI Synchronization. All Cakewalk 5.0 products synchronize audio and MIDI tracks during recording and playback. In addition, Cakewalk Pro Audio and Cakewalk Professional sync to all popular SMPTE/MTC formats.

The entire Cakewalk line uses advanced disk caching and file sharing to minimize RAM and hard disk requirements as well as CPU processing.

  • Intuitive Clip Song Structures. Use the improved Track view to create and edit "clips" of music in a more intuitive manner. Clips display MIDI or audio data with your custom names and colors, giving you a multi-track overview of your music.

  • Enhanced Notation (Cakewalk Pro Audio, Cakewalk Professional, Cakewalk Home Studio only). Insert, edit, and print guitar chord grids, hairpins, pedal markings, expression text, and lyrics in your multi-track staff notation. Select from a comprehensive library of pre-defined chord grids. View and print your notation with enharmonic spelling of accidentals.

  • More Instrument Definitions. The Cakewalk 5.0 line now offers more instrument definitions than ever before. You'll see your MIDI instrument's customized patches, notes, controllers, faders, and banks, displayed with their descriptive names, not vague numbers. This convenient feature makes your editing and recording sessions carefree. Over 180 definitions for the top instruments on the market today. New instrument definitions include Alesis DM5(TM) Digitech Studio Vocalist(TM); E-MU Ultra Proteus(TM); Korg Prophecy(TM); Lexicon Reflex(TM); Novation BassStation(TM) Promix 01(TM) much more. You can even create your own custom instrument definitions.

  • Multiple Undo/Redo. Experiment in comfort. Multiple Undo/Redo allows you to retrace your steps back up to 128 editing commands. Fast-forward or rewind through an entire editing session with ease, recreating the file at each stage.

  • Cakewalk TECHniques(TM). These 6 tutorial movies will make you a Cakewalk power user in no time. Narration and live-motion screens make these the perfect Cakewalk learning tools. Cakewalk Pro Audio 5.0 Deluxe features 12 additional tutorials on advanced editing functions.

  • The Virtual Jukebox(TM). An interactive music player for Windows. With the Virtual Jukebox you can create your own set lists of music to play back automatically in any order you want. Load and play Cakewalk music files, Standard MIDI files, and even Windows audio wave files.

  • JAMMER(R) Hit Session(TM). The interactive MIDI back up band. Pick the instruments and music styles you'd like to have accompany you, then jam away. JAMMER(R) Hit Session creates unique improvisations in real-time! If you're having trouble creating a part, just give JAMMER(R) Hit Session some guidelines, and let it improvise the part for you. An excellent tool for adding spontaneity to MIDI sequences.

  • The New Music Experience. Experience the future of interactive music. The Cakewalk 5.0 CD-ROMs include two multimedia recordings by Boston-rocker Charlie Farren. You can open up and listen to these audio+MIDI files, then remix them in Cakewalk. Watch the lyrics and notation scroll along in real-time, conduct your own edits to the multi-track audio and MIDI-even add new parts.
