Yamaha Releases FS1R Formant Shaping/FM Synth October 22, 1998In the quest to break new ground in synthesizer technology, Yamaha has produced the FS1R formant shaping tone generator. If you've grown tried of the same old PCM sample based synthesizers and need to create totally new and different sounds, the FS1R may be the perfect match for you. The FS1R is not geared towards any specific genre, but is rather intended to let you have some real fun creating new, unique, and downright wacky sounds. At the heart of the FS1R lies a formant processing engine which can be controlled with real-time controllers, envelope generators, LFOs, velocity, and with any of the 90 preset formant sequences. The FS1R also offers classic FM synthesis as well with incredible control. It can even receive bulk data from Yamaha's DX-series synthesizers so you can import some of your existing sounds. And then when you're ready to have some real fun, you can combine formant shaping and FM synthesis, opening doors to a new world of sounds. For real-time control, the FS1R sports four knobs on the front panel that can be assigned to a wide range of different parameters. These knobs also serve double duty as data entry controls for efficient editing. Up to 16 controllers can be used at once for even more expressive performance.
