NemeSys Announces GigaHarp Sound Library

August 23, 1999

NemeSys Technology, Inc. announced the release of the GigaHarp sound library for GigaSampler® today. Developed in conjunction with harpist Gary Garritan and priced at $299. (US), this library features 300 stereo samples totaling over a gigabyte of harp sounds.

"Harps have very interesting and unique harmonics and overtones that cannot be captured with small samples. When I initially attempted sampling with various hardware-based formats, the sound was weak and ineffective," emphasized Garritan.

"With the advent of GigaSampler, not only was it possible to sample every note of the harp, but it was also possible to sample various kinds of plucks," Garritan continued. "The nuances of the instrument could finally be captured with a great degree of precision and realism."

Every string of a Salvi Pedal Harp has been sampled in stereo with four attacks or velocities (soft, medium-soft, medium, and loud plucks) per string, two harmonics per string and hand-dampening and muffling. Each pluck was recorded in 24-bit resolution using Neumann KM-84 microphones, on-board RMC pick-ups and Neve 1263 &1272 mic preamps. The samples capture the entire duration of each string's natural decay.

Released in January 1998, NemeSys' GigaSampler software has revolutionized the sampler industry with its ability to stream multi-gigabyte sounds from a single hard drive in real-time.

"Gary's work on this sound library is amazing," added Francis Preve, Program Director for NemeSys. "With some hand-crafted harps commanding prices of $50,000 or more, the true sound of the acoustic harp is now available to mainstream musicians at an incredible price point. We're very excited about this product."
