Gibson Announces the SG Supreme
February 15, 1999Gibson USA introduces the SG Supreme, a direct descendant of Gibson's original solidbody guitar, the Les Paul. The Supreme features a AA figured maple top, on a mahogany back with Les Paul appointments including a bound ebony fingerboard, bound headstock, gold hardware, and split diamond inlay. The fine maple top is enhanced with a Fireburst finish.
The electronics consist of two authentic, vintage P-90 single coil soap bar pickups that have a raspy, fat tone with an emphasized midrange punch, great for rock & roll.
Born in 1961, this SG was the first Gibson to feature the classic double sharp cutaway body. It was introduced as part of the fading Les Paul line and carried the "Les Paul Custom" name, logo, split diamond headstock inlay with two humbucking pickups through 1963.
The lighter, thinner mahogany body worked well and sales soared. However, Les Paul didn't like the styling and in 1963 the new Les Pauls were renamed "SG". Why "SG"? "Solid guitar", that's why.
Since then the SG has garnered a reputation for it's cool fast neck and bad boy sound. The SG was embraced by many of the original rock guitar heroes including Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton; then Angus Young and Tony Iommi.
