Soundscape Digital Technology has announced two new R.Ed Recorder/Editor models specifically designed to address the Music/Studio Recording and Radio/Mastering/AV markets, at more affordable prices. They are on track to ship before the September AES Convention in Los Angeles.

The two new models, called R.Ed/16 and R.Ed/24 will provide the same editing capabilities and plug-in software DSP effects options of a full blown R.Ed system, but each has specific hardware features allowing customers to purchase a system which best suits their track, sync, and I/O requirements. R.Ed/16 and R.Ed/24 are derivatives of the Award Winning 32 to 128 Track R.Ed system and so come complete with the stable and mature V3.0 Editor software providing a highly developed, powerful feature set.

R.Ed/16 and R.Ed/24 should not be confused with other new and largely untested hard disk recorders being offered. They will work as expected from day one, with the advanced features and bullet-proof reliability that thousands of Soundscape users in top music and post-production studios worldwide rely on every day.

R.Ed/24

  • Physical tracks: 24 Tracks @ 24 bit 44.1/48kHz, 12 Tracks @ 24bit, 96kHz).
  • TDIF Ports: 3 x TDIF (24 bit, 24 inputs and 24 outputs).
  • MTC Sync: Master - MIDI Timecode (MTC), MIDI Clock and MIDI Song Position Pointer.
  • Slave - MIDI Timecode (MTC) with 'chase' or 'trigger' slave modes.
  • Expandable - multiple units operate as a single 48, 72 or 96 track recorder/editor.
  • Uses the most cost effective storage available - 1 or 2 standard IDE hard drives - up to 137GB each.
  • OMF Import/Export option for project transfer between R.Ed and Protools, Sadie, Fairlight etc.
  • CDWriter Red Book CD Mastering Option.

List Price US$4500

R.Ed/24 is the perfect system for music recording and editing for pro recording studios, project studios, editing of ADAT or DA-88 format tapes or for use within Emagic Logic Audio (Emagic has announced full R.Ed support) as an integrated audio and MIDI sequencing package. R.Ed/24 has 24 tracks, 24 bit at 48kHz (or 12 tracks at 24 bit, 96kHz), with 24 digital in/out via 3 x TDIF ports. The unit has one removable hard drive bay plus one position for an internal hard drive, for up to 274GB of audio storage and for synchronisation, the R.Ed Sync LTC Option board adds SMPTE time-code (LTC) in/out to the standard MTC Master or Chase Slave.

Connecting the 24 tracks directly to digital consoles is simple via the standard TDIF ports, and with the full range of configurable Soundscape iBox interfaces available, the system easily handles all common digital or analogue signal formats. Add Soundscape mixtreme PCI cards with additional DSP power for more real-time effects and easy integration with PC applications like Gigasampler and Gigastudio, soft synths like Surreal, Reality and Reaktor, software like Acid, Samplitude, Vegas, Logic Audio, Cubase VST, Cakewalk and more.

R.Ed/24 can be used for 24 track punch-in/out recording (just like 'stand-alone' recorders) controlled by the transport controls of a mixing console via Sony 9 pin P2 protocols or from any MIDI hardware controller (eg. Mackie HUI, JL Cooper MCS-3000 range). In addition to the easy and reliable track laying capabilities, the V3.0 Editor software is a fully featured DAW having all the features of the top systems, with full 5.1 surround mixing, 128 tracks of dynamic mix automation, 16 bus configurable real-time DSP based mixing and a wide range of top DSP based real-time plug-ins from some of your favourite names like Apogee, Aphex, Arboretum, Cedar, Dolby, TC Works, Sonic Timeworks and more.

R.Ed/16 is for the user who needs a professional level of recording and editing with professional balanced inputs and outputs, but doesn't need the full track count of a full blown R.Ed/32 system.

Typical uses are for radio editing, CD mastering and restoration work, DVD preparation, or integrated with a non-linear video editing system for recording voiceovers, or editing music and sound effects tracks.

R.Ed/16 has 16 tracks, 24 bit at 48kHz or 8 tracks at 24 bit, 96kHz with up to 12 inputs and 16 outputs via 2 in/4 out AES/EBU digital, plus 8 digital in/out channels via one TDIF port. R.Ed/16 is therefore the logical replacement for the successful SSHDR1-Plus system.

You can add the optional R.Ed Analogue interface board, which has 2 in/4 out balanced XLRs using high specification 24 bit, 96kHz AD/DA converters for true 'clear as crystal' mastering performance. The R.Ed/16 has the right audio specification and connections required for layback to Betacam VTRs, mastering at 24 bit, 96kHz or connecting to other professional equipment via the AES/EBU connectors. These also support 96kHz sample rates for digital in and out (single wire).

The R.Ed/16 unit has one removable hard drive bay plus one position for an internal hard drive, for up to 274GB of audio storage via standard low cost IDE hard drives. For synchronisation, the professional R.Ed Sync AV option board has VITC and LTC in/out, to support all types of SMPTE time-code, plus sync to RS422 (via Sony 9 pin protocols) and video reference signal (e.g. video black burst). MTC Master/Chase Slave sync is also provided. Like the full 32 R.Ed, R.Ed/16 has real-time DSP based mixing and effects, full dynamic mix automation, compatibility with many hardware controllers and integration with video editing systems like DPS Velocity or Fast Silver.

Options for R.Ed/16

R.Ed Analogue - Provides 2in, 4 Out Analogue I/O via professional +24dBU (max) XLR Balanced connectors. 24 bit 96kHz AD/DA converters with 110dB specifications.
