Fender to Introduce a "Better Sounding, Better Playing" Guitar For Summer NAMM

May 25, 2000

Fender is proud to announce that it will unveil the next step in the evolution of its flagship line of electric guitars and basses at this summer’s NAMM show in Nashville, TN.Fender will host an event at the historic RCA recording studio in Nashville on July 20, 2000 to introduce the new models of Stratocasters, Telecasters, Precision Basses and Jazz Basses to an invitation-only audience.

The new line will replace Fender’s American Standard Series, the guitars and basses that were first introduced in January, 1987, and that propelled Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) to the head of the guitar industry.Since their introduction, American Standard Series guitars and basses have been the best selling line of all Fender guitars produced at its Corona, CA manufacturing facility.

For over two years since the new facility in Corona opened its doors, Fender has been refining its manufacturing to the point where it could to produce the line of instruments that it will soon introduce. This new line will represent a level of quality and value that will go unrivaled by any other guitar manufacturer.

Industry and consumer speculation surrounding the change has already generated a number of both positive and negative phone calls, letters and e-mails to Fender.Retailers and consumers alike are frequently asking whether or not this means that Fender will discontinue guitars made in the United States, and if the same standards of quality will apply to the new line. While FMIC vows that quality and value will not suffer, it will release no specifics until July 20th.

"Think of this not as a discontinuation, but as an evolution," says Fender vice president of electric guitars, Mike Lewis."Since the very first days of Fender, we have continually refined and improved our instruments. This new line is the result of what players have been asking us for over the years. I can’t say exactly what we’ve done, but this will be a better sounding, better playing guitar."
