Guitar Week 2001 Returns to Berklee CollegeBerklee Faculty to Present Concerts and Clinics Feb. 28 - March 2 February 22, 2001From Wednesday, February 28, through Friday, March 2, the Berklee
College of Music Guitar Department will present Guitar Week 2001, an annual series of concerts
and clinics, by visiting artists, Berklee's renowned faculty, and some of the college's top
guitar students. All events are free except Thursday and Friday night concerts in the
wheelchair-accessible Berklee Performance Center. BPC events are $4.00 -- $1.00 for seniors.

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, Brazilian guitarist Nelson Faria will present a free clinic at 4:00 p.m.
and a free concert at 7:00 p.m in the David Friend Recital Hall, 921 Boylston Street. Faria's
evening concert will feature Bass faculty Oscar Stagnaro, who is the bassist with Paquito
D'Rivera. Guitarist, arranger, and composer Nelson Faria teaches at the Estacio de Sá University in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the leading guitarists in Brazil, Faria has performed and recorded
with Milton Nascimento and Edu Lobo, among others. His book, "The Brazilian Guitar Book" is
published by Sher Music Co.
On Thursday, March 1, visiting artist Alex Skolnick will present a free rock clinic at 1:00
p.m. at the David Friend Recital Hall. Skolnick, who recorded five albums with Testament, has
toured nationally with bassist Stu Hamm and recorded with Michael Manring and Attention
Deficit, whose second album will be released in the spring. He has been a columnist for
GuitarWorld, Guitar Player, and Guitar magazines.
At 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, visiting artist and alumna Leni Stern '80 will present a
major residency clinic in the David Friend. Stern recently followed up her 1998 critically
acclaimed "Recollection" (voted Top Ten of the Year by Billboard-Jazz and Performing
Songwriter) with the lush, orchestral "Kindness of Strangers."And at 7:00 the Bebop Guitars take the Friend stage for a faculty jazz guitar recital featuring
John Baboian, Larry Baione, John Marasco, Jack Pezanelli, and John Wilkins. The group recently
released their first album, "Bebop Guitars and More!"
And at 8:15 on Thursday, March 1, guitar faculty Scotty Johnson and Joe Musella will present a
classic rock concert at the Berklee Performance Center. On Friday, March 2, Professor Jon Damian's Buddy System Marathon happens from 9:00 a.m. until
5:00 p.m. in Room 410, 921 Boylston Street. Downstairs in the David Friend Recital Hall
between noon and 5:00 p.m., the Guitar Dept. Faculty Clinic Marathon features Dan Bowden, Bret
Willmott, Lauren Passarelli, Mike Williams, and Jim Kelly.
Also Friday, Guitar chair Larry Baione and Trio perform a jazz recital at 7:00 p.m. in the
David Friend. And Friday at 8:15 p.m. in the Berklee Performance Center, a Guitar Student Showcase will
feature outstanding student groups in a variety of styles led by Eduardo Faiella, Sebastian
Müller, and "Monster" Mike Welch.Prior to becoming a Berklee student, Mike Welch played blues and rock guitar professionally for
ten years. The Monster Mike Welch Band, featuring Mike as singer, songwriter, and lead
guitarist, released three critically acclaimed CDs on the Tone-Cool label and toured the United
States and Europe. In 1995, the band won the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Blues Act. In
the past year, Mike Welch has become an in-demand blues and roots sideman, touring and/or
recording with Tom Hambridge, James Cotton, Shemekia Copeland, Brian Templeton, and Sugar Ray &
the Bluetones. Mike has put together a special trio for Guitar Week featuring Brad Hallen, of
the Susan Tedeschi Band, on bass guitar.
