Rupert Neve Designs Launches Portico 5016 Duo Mic Pre/Variable Phase DI

Rupert Neve Designs has launched the Portico 5016, a two-channel device combining the well-known RND 5012 microphone preamplifier with a D.I., which may be used together or independently. A Variable Phase control allows the manual phase-alignment of the direct input source in relation to the microphone input signal.

The new 5016 is the sixth product to be introduced into the half rack, 1U Portico Series. It features very short signal paths, minimal negative feedback and custom-designed transformers that, on the D.I. input, provide ground isolation and the virtual elimination of interference loops. Like all the Portico range modules, the 5016 is built in Texas to ensure the highest quality control.

The independent D.I. input can select between a high impedance instrument or line level source and provides up to 30dB of gain. The Variable Phase control enables the acoustically derived microphone input signal to be exactly phase-coherent when combined with the directly derived signal from a stringed instrument pickup or electronic keyboard. A front panel "THRU" jack socket provides independent access to the unprocessed instrument D.I. signal.

The microphone preamplifier section of the 5016 is identical to the Portico 5012 and is designed to provide very low source loading, enabling modern, high-performance microphones to give of their best from a wide variety of sources, from vocals to percussive instruments. The 5016 provides gain control from +72dB to -6dB via an accurate stepped rotary switch and an associated continuously variable trim control.

A continuously swept 12dB per octave high pass filter covering the frequency range of 20Hz to 250Hz and the famous "Silk" circuit provide the warmth and presence of Mr. Neve's classic audio circuit designs and offer further control of source material. Switches for mute, phase reverse and 48V phantom power are also present on the front panel.

The 5016 can be ordered in either vertical or horizontal configurations and is designed to be used either out on the cutting room floor or enclosed in a standard 19" rack frame. Designed as a tool to shape and sweeten instrument or vocal sounds, the Portico 5016 is a tremendous addition to studios of all levels and an extraordinary value for under $1,200 ($1,195 US MSRP).
