Yamaha VL70m Virtual Acoustic Synthesizer
July 12, 1996 -- Yamaha, the company that pioneered Virtual Acoustic synthesis, has introduced an affordable half-space rack module that puts this ground-breaking technology within financial reach of most musicians. Virtual Acoustic synthesis is entirely new sound technology which, for the first time, provides access to the physical characteristics of an actual acoustic instrument by way of a computer model. Aggressively priced at $799.95, the new sound module, called the VL70m, uses the same physical modeling technology as the first commercially available Virtual Acoustic synthesizer - the Yamaha VL1, introduced in 1994 - but at a fraction of the cost. By blowing into a breath controller attached to the front panel of the VL70m and triggering pitch with any MIDI keyboard, the musician can create startling expressive lead and melodic voices with unprecedented realism. Alternatively, the musician can use the unit in conjunction with the Yamaha WX11 MIDI Wind Controller, making the ideal "first choice" for wind controller players. "This is everyman's VL," said Avery Burdette, product manager, Yamaha Corporation of America. "Virtual Acoustic Synthesis represents a quantum leap in sound technology, and the VL70m serves as the new price-to-performance reference point from which all other physical modeling synthesizers will be judged."
