Studer Displays D424-2 Magneto-Optical Disk Recorder
July 11, 1997 -- Studer's new magneto optical disk recorder offers 16, 20, or 24 bit linear recording capabilities as well as 20 bit A/D and D/A converters. The 424-2 includes a digital scrub capability and serial control option, time code reader and generator, AES/EBU and SPDIF inputs. Designed as a direct replacement for the A820 1/2" analog mastering deck, it features 5.25" high density magneto-optical disk as the recording medium offering over an hour of uncompressed audio on a standard ISO 1.3/2.6 GB cartridge. Applications that require recording in bit reduced formats are well suited with the optionally available L.R.C. (lossless real-time compression), Dolby AC-2 or ISO/MPEG 1 Layer 2 plug-in. Familiar "tape deck" functions with front-panel controls are provided for easy operation. Large keys such as PLAY, STOP and RECORD, as well as a jog/shuttle wheel, LED peak meter for two channels and an edit section that features comfortable functionality for speech and music editing work, are available via front panel or the optionally available new remote controller. Both analog (balanced, XLR type) and digital (AES-3 and SPDIF) I/O's are implemented. A built in synchronizer with SMPTE/EBU time code reader and generator enables easy integration in video/film environments. The device can lock to an external video reference, to a word clock, an AES/EBU audio input or an ES-11 reference signal. Remote control via SONY 9-pin protocol and/or serial RS 422 interface is also possible. Network operation is enabled by an Ethernet interface. The open and future oriented system architecture based on a SCSI-2 bus allows fast adaptation to future drive models. The direct interconnection to the Studer D741 CD Recorder allows subcode and data transfer in the CD recording process. With these interfaces the unit is also prepared for future PC control.
