Studer Introduces D741 CD Recorder
July 11, 1997 -- With the increasingly widespread ability of CD pressing plants to mass-produce product from a single original disk, the introduction of Studer's new second-generation D741CD recorder is particularly timely. The D741 includes analog I/O, AES/EBU and SPDIF digital interfacing and a standard SCSI-2 interface. A built-in sample-rate converter allows the digital inputs to accept signals at any sample rate between 32 and 48 kHz, while on the analog side, individual left and right gain controls are provided for uncalibrated operation, plus a calibrated mode for use with fixed studio levels. The Studer D741 may be operated from the front panel, while monitoring can be carried out on headphones or on the built-in monitor speakers. An illuminated CD lid and labeling facility provide additional functionality. The D741 allows ISRC and catalog numbers to be defined with the built-in alphanumeric keypad. The copy flag may also be defined. Track and Index increments can be handled manually. In auto mode, track increments can be taken over from digital sources such as CD, DAT, MiniDisc and DCC. For analog sources, track increments can be written by detecting the start of modulation based on an adjustable threshold. A built-in audio delay of up to 1 second guarantees the correct pause between the subcode being written and the actual track start, while the delay can also be used to compensate for discrepancies between the onset of audio and the track incrementing trigger information, such as late start IDs from DAT tapes. In addition to front panel and standard remote operation, the D741 can also be controlled via the SCSI-2 interface, allowing it to be used in conjunction with Studer's new magneto-optical recorder, the D-424-2, or third-party compatible software. Via SCSI, CDs can be written in either Assemble or Immediate modes. Two D741's connected via SCSI can be utilized to copy Compact Discs at double speed, and the SCSI feature may also be used to create the full range data-based CD discs, including CD-I and CD-ROM XA, including full multi-session capability. To ensure maximum reliability, the D741's laser is calibrated for each disc recorded. In addition, the laser is dynamically controlled during the write process to compensate for finger prints, dust or other surface anomalies on the disc. The D741 CD Recorder sells for $3950, and is available directly from Studer, HPNA, in Nashville, TN.
