The Neumann KM180 Miniature Microphone Series
July 26, 1999 -- Neumann continues to fill the demand for affordable quality and performance with the introduction of the 180 Miniature Microphone Series. Targeted mainly to project and home recording studios, the Neumann KM180 Series consists of three compact, matte black or silver nickel, miniature microphones. Two new models, the KM183 omnidirectional and KM185 hypercardioid join the previously introduced KM184 cardioid unit providing end users with a variety of pick-up patterns to handle diverse recording and live sound applications. Sleek, small and sonically precise, the Neumann KM180 Series Miniature microphones are well suited for the reproduction of acoustic and string instruments, as well as vocals. "As the modem day successors of the venerable KM83/84 models, these new microphones benefit from optimized mechanical construction and from the conscious omission of modularity," noted Karl Winkler, product manger, Neumann USA. By implementing these parameters, Neumann has been able to reduce costs while maintaining the Neumann standard of excellence. The entire concept of the KM180 Series is based upon offering end users the highest audio performance possible for the price." The dynamic range of the KM184 surpasses the KM84 by 21dB mainly through the reduction of self noise and an increased sound pressure handling capability of up to 138dB. The KM180 Series microphones feature the same transformerless circuitry as used in the KM100 system. Output is balanced and phantom (48V) powered. Featuring the newly developed DC to DC converter, the microphones are not affected by the possible unbalanced inputs of equipment such as DAT recorders.
