Roland Introduces V-Custom Drum Set and TD-8 Sound Module

July 26, 1999 -- With the introduction of the new V-Custom Set and V-drums TD-8 Percussion Sound Module, Roland brings the V-drums sound and playability together in a compact package at a lower price point, while at the same time adding new features and functionality. The new V-drums TD-8 Percussion Sound Module is a 64-voice COSM (Composite Object Sound Modeling) based instrument which packs over 1,200 high-quality drum/instrument sounds and over 700 dynamic Preset patterns into a user-friendly, highly flexible unit. Up to 12 pads can be connected simultaneously, while an onboard sequencer facilitates playing or practicing with Preset patterns and songs. For ultimate live playing flexibility, up to 100 different drum patterns and 50 original songs can be stored and easily accessed.

TD-8 Sound Module

Drummers will appreciate the TD-8's new V-EDIT function, which allows drum sounds to be completely shaped and tuned via Roland's proprietary COSM modeling technology-all in manner that mirrors the selection and tuning of acoustic drums. Using V-EDIT, parameters such as shell depth, drum head type, tuning, muffling and snare strainer adjustment can be quickly accessed and completely edited via an elegant interface with individual drum graphics. Trigger parameters like scan time, re-trigger cancel, mask time, crosstalk, and other parameters like pad sensitivity, threshold curve and rim sensitivity can also be adjusted per Patch, letting drummers create unique and highly expressive drum sounds intuitively. The TD-8's sound engine is also GM-compatible for triggering from external sequencers.

The TD-8's flat-top design and easy-to-read backlit LCD makes viewing and editing of functions easy, especially during performance. A total of four outputs (two stereo output jacks), full MIDI compatibility and a headphone output add to the TD-8's functionality.

The V-Custom Set

The V-Custom Set is graced with compact new 8-inch PD-80 V-Pads and a new KD-80 V-Kick Pad, both of which feature a proprietary mesh-head design from Roland and REMO® USA Inc. This design offers an extremely realistic playing feel and quiet pad dynamics, even during aggressive playing. The dual-trigger PD-80R senses separate head and rim shot strokes for snare drum applications, and is even sensitive enough to be played with brushes, while the single-trigger PD-80 is perfect for tom and percussion applications. The PD-80 V-Pad is backward-compatible with other Roland electronic products, including the TD-10, TD-7, TD-5, and SPD-20.

The V-Custom's new KD-8 V-Kick Pad is a sturdy, responsive 8-inch kick pad featuring a mesh head for extremely accurate triggering and a natural rebound. The KD-8 features a four-leg stand to prevent slipping, and can be used with any standard kick drum pedal. The V-Kick is compatible with the TD-10, TD-7, TD-5, and SPD-20.

The V-Custom Set comes complete with stand, TD-8 module, PD-80R, PD-80 Pads, cymbal pads, and all necessary hardware.
