Sabian Debuts Radia, New Terry Bozzio Signature Cymbals

January 29, 1998 -- SABIAN Ltd. is pleased to introduce RADIA, a series of Signature cymbals and sounds designed with noted drummer Terry Bozzio. With its name derived from the radial scoring that etches the upper surface of each piece for a raw, oriental appearance, RADIA responds with sounds that range from mysteriously dark to brightly melodic Comprising a diverse selection of 35 cymbals and effects of varying sizes, metal densities, sonic colors and tonal textures, the RADIA introduction is highlighted with a focus on 7", 8" and 9" Cup Chimes, 16" and 18" Crashes, and 18" and 20" Chinese. Other models may be special ordered.

Says Bozzio: "RADIA are the first cymbals in the history of drumset playing to actually elevate cymbals Into the realm of a melodic instrument. My goal was to draw on the ancient past to create future sounds... to balance bright and dark tonalities into perfect blends of pitched and non-pitched responses of sophisticated warmth and raw primitive power RADIA Chinese models are low-pitched, for an exotic earthy-firey roar Men perfectly paired in stacked Chinese/crash combinations they explode as coarse and industrial 'gated white noise' effects. The melodic cymbals are in sets of graduated pitches, with short durations, equal timbres and volumes to enhance melodic playing To cut with the snare drum, the hats are crisp and articulate, while the exotic sounds of the Far East were my inspiration for the chimes, bells and gong RADIA models work individually, in stacked combinations, or in melodic sets."

Adds SABAN Cymbal Specialist Mark Love: "Terry had 100% hands-on involvement with every aspect of the design and creation of RADIA, spending weeks working day and night with our hand hammering team to ensure these cymbals met his every expectation. During recent clinic tours across Canada and the U.S. these new sounds met with an overwhelmingly favorable response, with many drummers recognizing that Mile their playing may differ from Terry's Mere were RADIA models which would make for highly interesting additions to their own setups."
