Electro-Voice Sx80 Lightweight, Compact Speaker System

January 28, 1999 -- Electro-Voice is featuring the Sx80 speaker system, the latest speaker in the trend-setting System 2000™ product line, at the NAMM Convention. The Sx80 is designed to address the needs of musicians desiring rugged portability and great sound reproduction from a smaller speaker, and sound contractors seeking a compact, high-performance system.

"One of the greatest challenges in pro audio is constructing a lightweight, compact speaker system that offers the sonic capabilities of larger systems," says Mike Torlone, director of marketing music products for Electro-Voice. "The Sx80 meets this challenge by employing the same technological advances engineered into the larger Sx300 speaker, yielding a system that is easy to transport and set up, or install, yet capable of delivering big sound." The Sx80's cabinet dimensions are an ultracompact 15 3/4 inches H x 11 1/2 inches W x 8 3/4 inches D and the system weighs just 16 pounds.

EV's exclusive Ring-Mode Decoupling (RMD™) technology is engineered into the Sx80, giving the system its superior sonic clarity. RMD™ eliminates sound-coloring resonant modes created by the vibration interaction of the enclosure, the speaker components and the crossover. RMD™ gives Sx80 the sonic clarity normally associated with studio monitor systems.

The Sx80 utilizes paintable, high-impact polystyrene enclosure material critically shaped to yield maximum sonic performance. The two-way system offers an 8-inch woofer for bass frequency duties and a DH2005 high frequency compression driver loaded in a constant directivity 90 degree x 60 degree horn with EVI's VariPath™ geometry for uniform coverage. The system offers a frequency response of 70 to 20,000 Hz with a power handling capacity of 175 watts based on the conservative eight-hour EIA test.

The system offers a variety of models to fill the needs of any user. Standard 8-ohm units are available, offering push-pin connectors and a black or white cabinet color (Sx8013 and Sx80W). The Sx80TB and Sx80TW are transformer versions offering a 60-watt tap terminal strip, also available in black and white. Weather-resistant versions with full-face, perforated metal grilles, offer an 8-ohm model (Sx80PI) and a transformer loaded model (Sx80PIX), both using terminal strip connections. The cabinets, available in black only, are compatible with the popular OmniMount® System 75 (uses inserts on rear of enclosure), with the Sx80MBB and Sx80MBW models addressing U-bracket mounting options. An optional stand mount kit is available.

"The Sx80 is the result of EV acting upon its customers wants and needs," states Torlone. "It is a superbly tailored system that addresses these needs. We feel the Sx80 will have a positive impact on the market and enjoy wide acceptance among both the live music industry and fixed installation situations."
