Computer Connection

The POD Pro comes with a copy of Emagic's cross-platform SoundDiver editor (click for a close-up)

Line 6 bundles the POD series with a copy of Emagic's SoundDiver MIDI editing program. Setup is simple, and the computer interface makes it easier to get into the unit's deeper features. I especially like the way I could play with the curve of the wah pedal onscreen. All POD parameters have a corresponding MIDI sysex message. You can use this feature to record the moves you make to a sequencer. On playback, your changes will be automated. This is especially useful if you want to use the POD Pro as an insert effect on a previously recorded track.

POD Pro's rear panel boasts a host of I/O connections

The POD Pro's I/O elevates it from cool preamp to serious studio tool. In addition to an instrument-level guitar in, and switchable stereo line outs, you get balanced stereo outs (also switchable between +4dBu and mic level), 24-bit S/PDIF and AES digital out, word-clock input, and the aforementioned stereo effects loop. Because of its automation features, the POD is an effective tool for "reamping" (processing a previously recorded guitar track); it offers a 1/4" line input and Unprocessed Guitar Out for just that purpose. Even the digital clock is switchable (front panel toggle, thank God) between 44.1kHz, 48kHz, and external sync. Good stuff.

Tone and Feel

I've played every just about every evolution of Line 6's modeling amps and preamps, and the POD Pro continues their march towards truly satisfying tone. No matter what guitar I threw at it, I was able to dial up the sound I wanted, as well as a few I hadn't previously imagined. As with a tube amp, some combinations worked better than others. (My Tele was overwhelmed by the Triple Rectifier model but sounded fabulous through the Brit Blues setting.) More important, the feel was right. The guitar remained responsive and real, never over-processed. Although it lacks some of the bells and whistles of the competition (especially in the effects department) the POD Pro is the clear choice for the digital-savvy tone connoisseur working in a professional environment.
