Quantizing and Other Commands

The MIDI Operations window groups commands for "massaging" MIDI data. (Too bad it's not a "windoid"-style palette that always stays in the foreground, much like a typical plug-in.)

These commands include:

  • Quantize
  • Transpose
  • Change Velocity
  • Change Duration
  • Select Notes (note selection according to their pitch)
  • Split Notes (same as above, with copy/cut option)
  • Input Quantize

Again, if you've ever used a certain MOTU sequencer, you'll feel very much at home here. For example, Quantize, Change Velocity and Change Duration are identical, nearly parameter for parameter, to their counterparts in Digital Performer.

The Quantize command in the MIDI Operations Window. Note how you can quantize the onset or tail of the notes.

The Change Duration command.

The Change Duration command in the MIDI Operations Window is actually quite sophisticated. It's very similar to the corresponding feature in Performer.

The other commands, however, are slightly less sophisticated. There's no scale-constrained transposition, for instance, and there are some omissions -- such as no groove quantize, or tempo scaling. I wouldn't be surprised if these features might be saved for a future implementation as real-time plug-ins.
