Be Inc. has released BeOS 5 Personal Edition as a free download which lets you experiment with a fully functional version of BeOS on a Windows-based PC without any complicated installation process. The upcoming Pro Edition will function on both Intel and PowerPC machines.


BeOS Version 5 to Be Free (1/22/2000)
Be Inc. is focusing more on the Internet appliance market, and has announced that they will release version 5 of BeOS for desktop computers for free. BeOS is an operating system optimized for audio and video applications.

BeOS to Gain Support for Roland UA-100 (9/26/1999)
Roland's UA-100 USB MIDI/audio interface should be supported with a BeOS driver due in the next several months. The UA-100 can also function as a preamp with built-in multi-effects.

RealPlayer G2 Coming to BeOS (8/23/1999)
Be Inc., and RealNetworks have announced an agreement that will bring RealPlayer G2 to the BeOS platform. A release date wasn't specified, but RealPlayer G2 will be included on BeOS CDs when available.


Peak Being Ported to BeOS (8/21/1999)
BIAS has announced that they will be porting their Peak digital audio editing software to BeOS. Peak allows stereo audio recording, editing, and processing, with support for MP3, Shockwave, RealAudio and more.


Summer NAMM is Underway! (7/23/1999)
The doors to this Summer's NAMM show in Nashville, TN have opened, and you can now check out some of the new products that haven been announced. This is just the beginning - there are lots more announcements that will be posted over the next week or so.


Steinberg Posts VST 2.0 SDK (7/19/1999)
Programmers can now download the VST 2.0 SDK to make plug-ins capable of sending and receiving MIDI data within the host application. It is being offered for Mac, Windows, SGI, and BeOS - hopefully a display of Steinberg's commitment to BeOS. The SDK is not a program, and useful only to programmers.


Summer NAMM Starts This Friday! (7/19/1999)
One of the biggest trade shows in the U.S. starts this Friday in Nashville. Though not as big as the Winter NAMM show held in Los Angeles earlier this year, there will still be plenty of new products announced, and you can read all about it here starting Friday morning!

New MIDI Interface Optimized for BeOS (6/24/1999)
Virtual DSP has been working on a new architecture for MIDI and audio over USB with the BeOS, and have announced their first product based around it - the MIDI Oxygen 44, 4-in and 4-out MIDI interface optimized for use with the BeOS.


BeOS Version 4.5 Released (6/17/1999)
Be Inc. has released BeOS 4.5, a new operating system designed specifically for audio and video applications. It is a free upgrade to registered 4.0 owners and includes improved hardware and audio card support on the Intel platform. BeOS 4.5 can be ordered on-line at www.bedepot.com.


BeOS and Echo Achieve 3ms Latency (5/28/1999)
Be has announced that in combination with Echo's audio interfaces like the Layla, Gina, and Darla, BeOS applications can experience output latencies of just 3 milliseconds! When using the computer to process a live audio input, the latency is just 8 milliseconds - substantially better than what can be achieved easily with MacOS or Windows.


T-RackS Demo for BeOS Released (5/15/1999)
IK Multimedia has posted a demo version of their T-RackS mastering software for BeOS Intel. It requires Release 4 and a 200 MHz Pentium? MMX.


BeOS to Support Envy24 Audio Hardware (4/22/1999)
IC Ensemble is working with Be to create drivers for IC's Envy24 controller which is being used in a variety of audio hardware from companies like Sonorus and Midiman.


RME to Release Beta Driver for Digi96 (4/19/1999)
Although BeOS driver development for RME's Digi96 card has been temporarily put on hold until the Media Kit in Release 4.5 is ready, RME does plan to release a beta driver with 2-channel support shortly.


BeOS Progress Report: BeDC '99 (4/14/1999)
The recent Be Developer Conference was devoted to the new Media Kit, and while overall it was light in terms of audio related announcements, there is some promising news from Steinberg.


T-RackS Demonstrated on BeOS (3/27/1999)
At this year's MusikMesse show, IK Multimedia was demonstrating a beta version of their T-RackS "analog" mastering software on a machine running BeOS. IK Multimedia will bring GrooveMaker to BeOS as well.


New Sample Editor Coming to BeOS (3/20/1999)
Blachford Technology is developing a new version of Aural Illusion for BeOS. A wealth of effects will be included, and a free version will also be released in May.


Sonic Timeworks to Support BeOS (3/16/1999)
Come this summer, Sonic Timeworks expects to have ported their line of audio effects plug-ins to BeOS.


Seer Systems to Support BeOS (3/11/1999)
Seer Systems, the makers of Reality and SurReal, intends to support BeOS in addition to Windows. It's not clear which product will be ported first though.


MusikMesse is Under Way! (3/3/1999)
With the NAMM show barely behind us, MusikMesse, a larger trade show held each year in Frankfurt, Germany has opened its doors. A number of products that weren't ready for NAMM will be on display here, and we'll be posting details on some of these products shortly.


The Pentium? III Preview Wrap Up (2/19/1999)
Intel's new Pentium? III processor holds some exciting possibilities for making music on a PC. In this feature you can read how products from Steinberg, Yamaha, Be, Seer Systems, G-VOX, and others are benefiting from the Pentium III's new features.


IK Multimedia Bringing Products to BeOS (2/18/1999)
IK Multimedia will be porting both GrooveMaker and their T-Racks Mastering Software to BeOS. Some progress has already been made, and the BeOS versions are expected to be available later this year.


Pentium? III to Hit 550 MHz (2/17/1999)
Although the Pentium? III processors haven't been formally introduced, Intel has announced that they will be available at speeds up to 550 MHz by Q2 of this year (over 600 MHz by year's end.) A number of music and audio companies, including Steinberg and Yamaha, were also on hand to demonstrate Pentium III enhanced versions of their software. More details will be posted shortly.


Max/MSP Bundle Now Shipping (2/15/1999)
Cycling '74 is now shipping a Max/MSP bundle for those that want to get MSP, but don't already own Max. The bundle includes a new revision of MSP. Both Max and MSP are being ported to BeOS, for release later this year.


More Developers Commit to BeOS (2/4/1999)
A number of new companies have publicly committed to bringing their applications and hardware support to BeOS. Recent additions include Opcode, Arboretum, IK Multimedia, CreamWare, Aardvark, RME, and Yamaha.


Winter NAMM Starts Next Thursday! (1/21/1999)
It's almost time for the annual Winter NAMM Show, being held January 28th through the 31st. This is the LARGEST music equipment show in the United States and is one of the biggest music equipment shows in the world. Lots of exciting things happen at NAMM and you won't miss a thing thanks to your friends at Harmony Central.


BeOS R4 to Ship December 23 (12/3/1998)
Release 4 (R4) of BeOS is scheduled to ship this month, and orders are now being taken on BeDepot. Versions with French and German documentation will ship in mid-January. If you aren't familiar with BeOS, check out our article BeOS Gaining Ground.


BeOS Steadily Building Up Support (11/25/1998)
A number of significant BeOS announcements were made last week, but according to Be, there is plenty more to come. Be has raised over $25 million in 1998 to keep expanding operations, and Release 4 (R4), which adds many more features and speed improvements, will be released in December. Harmony Central is working on a new BeOS software section to be officially launched with R4, which will also serve as a source for BeOS related news.


Digital Audio DJ Mixing Software for BeOS (11/20/1998)
Equipped with a computer running BeOS, DJs can now manipulate digital audio files without taking their hands off the turntables. FinalScratch for BeOS includes a special set of vinyl records and hardware that allows you to control the playback of a digital audio file directly from a turntable!


E-mu to Create BeOS Drivers for APS Card (11/16/1998)
E-mu's Audio Production Studio (APS), which offers audio recording, processing, and synthesis on a PCI card, will gain basic audio I/O support under BeOS in early 1999. The development schedule for support of all the APS' features should be disclosed early next year as well.


Emagic To Bring Logic Audio to BeOS (11/16/1998)
Emagic has announced that they will release the Platinum, Gold, and Silver versions of Logic Audio for BeOS in 1999. In addition, their Audiowerk8 PCI Card will also become BeOS compatible some time next year. Steinberg recently announced their intentions to port NUENDO to BeOS, and Sonorus plans to provide BeOS drivers for their STUDI/O PCI card.


Steinberg to Develop for BeOS (11/10/1998)
Steinberg has announced their intention to bring their NUENDO post-production audio and MIDI software to BeOS. Steinberg is the first major software company to commit to developing for BeOS, but it may be some time before a shipping product is seen. No other Steinberg products for BeOS have been announced yet.


Sonorus Working on BeOS Drivers (11/5/1998)
According to BeOS Central, Sonorus is working on BeOS drivers for their STUDI/O card. Earlier this year, Sonorus added OSS support for the STUDI/O, allowing it to be used with Linux and several other UNIX operating systems.


BeOS Gaining Ground (10/20/1998)
Ever get frustrated with your Windows PC or Mac? Keep an eye out for BeOS - an operating system designed from the ground up to do multimedia. This article will give you an idea of what it can do, and introduce some of the applications that are available today. The next release of BeOS due by year's end will pack some impressive power.


Video-to-MIDI Converter for BeOS (5/25/1998)
If you're looking for new and interesting ways to generate MIDI data, you may want to check out Grabbo for BeOS (Intel and PowerPC platforms). The program uses a computer vision algorithm to analyze frames of a video signal, which are compared to stored frames. A free beta version of the program is available for download.


BeOS Release 3 for PowerPC Ships (4/20/1998)
The latest release of BeOS for PowerPC computers is now shipping. You can order BeOS R3 at an introductory price of $69.95, which includes versions for both PowerPC and Intel based machines. BeOS is a powerful operating system developed specifically for multimedia applications. Only a limited number of machines are supported at this time.
