Harmony Central Buyer's Guide

Syd 1.06

Syd (formerly "SoftSynth") is a Macintosh based instrument editor and
software synthesizer by Jim Bumgardner. It has a graphical "patch cord"
interface, and is relatively easy to use, compared to other music languages.
It is particularly suitable for teaching computer music.

Syd has some of the power of the Music-N languages, but an
easier-to-use graphical interface. It is well suited for
teaching computer music concepts. A version for PowerMacs &
68k Macs can be found here:

Syd is still very much a work in progress. Features still to come are:

Hammered string instrument (piano) simulation (in progress)
       Spatialization.
       Phase Vocoder.
       More useful functions (ala Csound)
       Custom (named) inputs to units.
JAVA version with standard unit template

Features already in place include:

       Graphical interface
       Generalized expression unit
Full expression parsing for most other sound units
(Limited) ability to read CSound Scores
Instrument abstraction via Nested Patches ("folder instruments")
Random (algorithmic) Score generator (extremely useful!)
       Real time audio previewing
       Karlplus/Strong Plucked String unit
       Delay/Reverb Unit
       Sampling Unit
       Butterworth filters
