A Guide For New Users

Welcome!

Welcome to Harmony Central! This guide is intended to help you quickly become familiar with Harmony Central, how to navigate around it, and how to get the most from it. We appreciate and enjoy hearing from the people that use this site - if you have minute, drop us a note and tell us what you think.

If you're new to the Web or 'Net in general and aren't quite sure how things work, you may want to look at the Help! page - it has links to guides that explain topics like how to use e-mail, ftp, USENET, the Web, etc. On the Help Page, you will also find simple tricks on using your browser, tips on how to find things on the 'Net, a short guide to filename extensions, and some advice on using mailing lists.

Layout of Harmony Central

Harmony Central has grown far beyond the original home page it was. It is now one of the premiere music-related sites on the Web, devoted in particular to topics of special interest to musicians. The 'front door' is the Harmony Central Main Menu, and it will lead you to each topic page (i.e. Guitar, MIDI, Bass, etc.).

Navigating Around Our Site

With a basic understanding of the layout, there are several ways to navigate between the topic pages. If you wish, you can return to the Harmony Central Main Menu and select whichever category you like. At the bottom of almost every web page that is part of Harmony Central, you will find a link back to the Main Menu. If you see our logo on this or other sites, odds are clicking on it will also bring you back to our Main Menu. Try it, if you like! Our logo is at the top of this page.

On some pages, you will find a summarized outline of the content in the page; this lets you see the page at a glance, and skip to a part you may be especially interested in. Go ahead and try out these techniques on this page.

When you feel you know your way around Harmony Central, you can use this Map of Harmony Central we've provided -- you may find it helpful in quickly seeing what you can do here.

Basic World Wide Web technology lets us provide links to other informative pages, even though these pages aren't part of Harmony Central. You can sometimes tell where you are by looking at the title of the Web page, but more reliably, your Web browser displays the Location, or URL, of the page you are reading -- as long as it starts "http://www.harmony-central.com", you are looking at content we've put on this site.

Keeping Up to Date

Our What's New page shows recent changes and additions to Harmony Central. As we add interesting content (or links to interesting content), we try to note it here. A New Products page lists new product announcements. We try to make you aware of new products within a day of receiving the manufacturer's press release.

Downloading Files

Many first time visitors see all the files available and start downloading everything in sight. There's nothing wrong with that - that's why the files are here! - but you may want to use the ftp server to save time. It contains most of the files on Harmony Central, and the larger files are compressed and you can also get groups of files in a archive file, instead of downloading each file individually. To use the ftp server, just use anonymous ftp to ftp.harmony-central.com (using an ftp client may be faster).

Adding Links to Harmony Central

People familiar with our site often Bookmark one or more of our pages. If you do the same, we ask that you only bookmark pages whose Location (URL) ends in a '/'; pages ending with '.html' or '.txt', for example, are liable to be moved or obsoleted, causing an error.

How are we doing?

We rely on your feedback to help develop this site, so if you have any comments or suggestions for us, please let us know. Letting us know what we've done right or what we've done wrong will help us continue improving this site. If you see something wrong with one of our pages, please let us know which page it's on.

Of course, if there's nothing wrong, you can just say hi! If you're curious about the people behind the pages, you can read About Harmony Central. We hope you enjoy your stay!
